b) At 1850A/14 Nov. Group Eisenhart was informed as follows: “In area 150 miles around 48˚45’N, 31˚45’W we are counting on 2 NE convoys. (Command also mentioned 2 SW convoys in the general area, but his information was very vague as to the position. These SW convoys were ONS 22 and ON 212.)

Comment: a) The expected NE convoys were SC 146 and HX 265, which sailed on 6 November.

b) It is not believed that the above information involved cipher compromise. It was probably derived from knowledge of convoy cycles together with awareness of southerly routing.
